Overview of our Service
Specialized Wheelchair and Custom Seating Systems
People
with developmental disabilities sometimes have special conditions
that can present a barrier to
mobility using ordinary seating
systems. The customized seating system creates needed support for
people with unique conditions such as physical deformities, a rotated
hip which can cause uneven weight
bearing in a seated position, a leg length discrepancy, a pronounced rib hump, a wind swept position, lower
extremity contractures, muscle tone problems, motor control or
coordination that interferes with their
mobility. A physical
therapist evaluates individuals with those special seating needs and
based on the
evaluation process a customized seating system can be built. The evaluation may be for a new wheelchair
and seating system or it can also be for modifications to an existing wheelchair.
The molding and completion of the custom molded seating system is to obtain the following goals:
to increase comfort and postural support
to ensure comfort and safety while being transported
to help prevent decubiti (pressure wounds)
to help functional ability for the individual’s body stability while reaching and or working with upper extremities
to help prevent additional skeletal deformities while the individual uses the system, and to improve organ functions
